I’ve lost my mind

IMG_0824Well, it’s official, I believe I have totally lost my mind.  The good news is that I have a license and can officially diagnosis myself with this.  Bad news is… I think it might actually be true.  Here is why, tonight when I went to leave work I noticed it was snowing and my heart skipped a beat (it’s okay nothing wrong there) and was excited that it was snowing.  Now tell me why someone who has seen almost 7 feet of snow in the last 20 days is excited that we are getting more snow still gets excited when it snows?!  Well all I can think is that it is beautiful.  Have you ever watched it snow?  It is so pretty and comes down so lightly.  It’s also so quiet.  Have you ever stood outside and just been a part of the snow.  It is like the snow muffles everything and it is so peaceful (well, except for the sound of plows going by).  Finally I find the snow causes us to slow down.  When driving or walking you want to slow down a little bit because things become slick and I don’t know about you but I am not a fan of sliding around anywhere especially without skates.

So the verdict is in… I have lost my mind.  But the good news is, that it is very peaceful with no thoughts going through my head at all.

Feeling off and Let down

So for the past few weeks including this week I have only worked 4 days.  I’m not bragging.  On the contrary, I find that it makes me feel a little off.  When I look at the calendar, in fact, I have not worked a full week since early December.  Some of those days I took off due to the holidays but some of those days have been due to the abundant amount of snow we have had in New England.  In fact if you are looking for your snow, I think we have it.  Since the beginning of February we have only had 5 days without snow and I think they were saying that we have over 7 feet of snow since late January.  I love snow but I think I’m done, really I think I am feeling a little off.

I like to have a schedule and I find I work better if I know what is going to happen in my week so these snow days, while I appreciate the time off with my family, I need to get back some normalcy or I think I’m gonna have to talk to my boss about working only 4 day work weeks (not really sure this will fly!).

So that is my feeling off, now on to my feeling let down…

Due to all this snow, I just found out that my half marathon scheduled for this weekend has been canceled and I also won’t be able to get my new jacket that I earned by completing the trilogy of half’s last year (which you could only get by coming to the race and picking it up also, as of right now they are not sure when they will be giving those out).  I get it, I understand that it will not be safe and shockingly they are predicting more snow for this weekend.  I was hopeful that I would finally get to go outside and run because I have been stuck on the treadmill since January.  With all this snow, I might be able to go outside safely in about April.  Now I don’t want this to come across as an all whiny post, in fact, while writing this I was hoping to inject some motivational, inspirational stuff, so here goes…

My training for my marathon is going great.  I have done all my runs on the treadmill and this includes my long weekend runs of 18 or 20 miles on any given weekend.  I’m feeling really strong and hopeful that this marathon in April will go well.

A little shoveling can be used as cross training right… well if so my cross training is going fabulous.  Plus when I am trapped inside, I have found some things I can do to spice up my ab routines and strength training even with my light weights of 5lbs and 10lbs.

Sorry I have been away so long, you would think with the days off I would keep my blog updated but sometimes when you “feel off” it’s pretty hard to think of things to talk about.  So like any good therapist would say, “It’s time to push through this and get back some normalcy” and this is what I intend to do.

Have you ever felt off?  What has gotten you back on?

Ever had a race canceled?  What did you do?

Blizzard of 2015

So we got a little snow today.  Did not leave the house due to the travel ban but here are a few pics from our snow day.

Good news is that my work has closed for tomorrow due to the over 30 inches of snow we received.  Looks like it will only be three day work week.  I’m okay with that!

Blizzard 2015 workout in pictures (27/31)

If you can’t make it to the gym, bring the gym to your home.  Here is how my Blizzard 2015 went in pictures:

Gym all set up for core and strength training. Little snow outside that will add to the work out later when I have to shovel.

Getting stronger with this but still struggling to make it through 3 sets.

Then some crazy ball exercises: 3 sets of 15 each

A little harder than it looks especially by the third set of 15.

Let's just say I cried during these and thought I was gonna die by the time I got to 15!

Let’s just say I cried during these and thought I was gonna die by the time I got to 15!  Oh and mine weren’t quite so high.  It’s not just holding this it’s rolling out and coming back to the pike position.

These were good.

These were good.

I was happy to get to these so I did 30 at each set because it seemed like resting after the pikes.

And then I finished up with yoga:

It was a great work out and because I didn’t have to worry about a time crunch due to not being able to go anywhere, I was able to relax and take my time.  Back to real life tomorrow and heading out to shovel eventually!

Happy 27th day of Janathon.

Made it through but it hurt (25/31)

All I wanted to do was get my long run done outside today.  All I wanted to do was run and feel my feet hitting the pavement and enjoy the sunshine.  All I wanted to do was not go to the gym to run 20 miles.

Well guess what, what I wanted and what I did were not in alignment!

I spent the late morning and early afternoon with friends I had not seen in a while and had planned to get my run in around 2.  I was kind of on track but did have to start around 2:30.  The wind was crazy windy and they talked about the temps plunging this afternoon setting us up for a blizzard on Tuesday (that’s right about 2 feet of snow is what they are predicting for my area).  I drove through the area I wanted to run and they had not plowed the sidewalks like they usually do so I knew right away that this was gonna have to be inside.  😦

I did however make the best of it.  I actually used headphones and watched a college basketball game which was great.  I got to see a legendary coach win his 1000 game in a very close game, it was a great distraction to what I was doing.

Because treadmills at the gym only let you go 10 miles before they shut off I had to break my run up, which would make it easy to quit or for me made it easier to make it through.  I did 8 miles, then took a quick trip to the bathroom, then 8 more and got some more water, and then finally the last 4, each time resetting the machine and stretching just enough to get it started again.  I also added some hills in every once in a while, nothing real long but maybe a mile here and there just to spice things up a little and actually give the legs a break.

I was glad to get the run done but this one took all the motivation I could muster to make it through.  When I restarted the treadmill for the last 4 miles I had some energy and was telling myself, “you can do this”.  But by the time I got 1.5 miles in to the last 4 I was hurtin’.  I went back to my mantra from 5 days ago during my sprints:“you will not meet your goals with easy!”   It would be easy to quit and say, “Hey at least I’ve done 17.5 miles that counts right!”  It would have been easy to at any time in the next 2.5 miles to stop because believe me, my legs began to scream and I began to have a few cramps in my legs.  But I kept hydrating, kept pushing and saying to myself “you will not meet your goals with easy!”  So glad to finish and so glad to stretch out, roll my legs, soak in a tub, and put on warm clothes and call it done!

On another note, I guess winter has finally made it to my area so I might be resigned to the treadmill for these long runs for a while.  If it truly snows as much as they are predicting, it will be a little while til the streets are clear enough to run on them again.  Don’t get me wrong, we won’t be trapped because we have lots of snowplows and they clear the roads well but being on the roads with huge mounds of snow is not safe because drivers can’t see you very well.  So I’ll take my chances inside.

I would say my training is going well, 4 full weeks completed, only 17 more weeks until the marathon!  It will be here before I know it.

How is your Janathon going?  Last full week!  Did you set in goals during this long first month of the year?  Did you hit them or are you close?  Mine was to stay fulling engaged in my plan.  I have exercised on each day I have planned and really working on my core.  Thanks for a great first month Janathon!

So glad it’s friday and a little Janathon cross training 23/31

I don’t know about you but weeks that start with a holiday seem to be the longest weeks.  I loved that this week was 4 days because I had a great weekend and was glad to be able to take another day off on Monday (Martin Luther King Day) but I sure seemed to be overwhelmed every day.  In my work we don’t get paid unless we have a client sitting in front of us so I packed my days so I wouldn’t have to use my vacation time to make up for the holiday.  Good news, I only had to use 2 hours and still able to leave work by 1 on friday but “man, I’m worn out!”

I am not sure I have ever been happier that we are supposed to get 4-6 inches of snow tomorrow making it a day for staying in, lounging, maybe reading a book and just taking it easy.  I know I have a long run scheduled for this weekend but I guess it will have to be on Sunday which is fine with me.  Just hoping that I don’t have to do 20 miles on the dreadmill and I can get outside for a little while.  🙂

Today’s cross training day included:
9 mile spin class at a moderate level 4 at the gym – this was only my second time to do this and it is fun and good for me but hard.  So still trying to figure out the whole spin class thing.

Did 3 sets of 10 (with 5lbs weights in each hand) of my dumbbell blast that I posted here.  Getting a little better but it too is a little difficult.  No pain, no gain.

So another day of Janathon complete and now I think it is time for bed and sleeping in.

I feel like a kid waiting for santa…. I can’t wait to see the snow fly.  (We haven’t had much this year so it will be nice.)

Happy 23rd Janathon day!

One more thing…. I got this shirt today and I thought I would share it.  Love it!

Janathon 19/31

Well there was lots of sitting, completing some online training for work and not getting out of my PJ’s until it was time to go to the gym.  Yep I showered to go to the gym.  Doesn’t everyone do that?!  Well really I showered because after my workout today, it was free chair massage day and I thought it would be good to smell clean and sweaty.    Not sure if that really makes since but it’s how I spent my day.

So today was cross training day and to change things up a little I tried this workout that I found on Pinterest (which is an awesome place to get all kinds of things especially workouts).  Here is the newest one I found and tried:

workout

I was thinking, “oh I’m in pretty good shape I’ll do this with 10lbs weights”.  Well guess what, one exercise in I was headed back to the weight rack and picking up the recommended 5 lbs weights.  Holy crap some of these exercises where insane.  They really do bring up that heart rate especially the reverse lunge and press.   I was only able to  2 sets of 15 but I am sure I will feel it tomorrow.

I started out with a 8.5 mile ride with random hills on the bike.  I’m finding that as cross training it’s very helpful.  And best of all I was able to finish it up with a nice 10 min chair massage.

Nothing like a 3 day weekend and now it’s a four day work week.  Looking forward to a busy and fast week.

Janathon Update:

8.5 mile random hill bike ride in 20 mins

Dumbell Blast

10 min Chair massage

How was your day today?  Ever try Pinterest?  If not, why, what are you waiting for?  If so, ever find anything good on Pinterest?

Janathon 18/31

Today’s exercise is brought to you by errands and things I “have to” do.  So no gym and no running outside.

Total workout includes:

20 mins straightening the house up for visitors and cleaning the bathroom

30 mins shopping in Target battling the crowds and getting the last minute items for college student returning to college

5 mins up and down the stairs carrying heavy bags, loading the car wondering how this child got all this home and what is this going to look at to bring all this home in May (gonna need to rent a uhaul)

2 hours of riding in the car stressing about the crazy drivers who are struggling to drive in the rain and sometimes ice

10 mins unloading said college student and getting all of her belongings to her room

And finally 3.5 hours stressing with heart rate rising watching my New England Patriots beat up on the Colts to go to the Superbowl!  Yippee and now to calm my breathing.

So I totally believe this was a great “rest day” for my marathon training and I’ll be back at it tomorrow.

Did you have a great weekend?  I hope you did.

Tomorrow is a holiday for me so a little sleeping in.  Yeah!

Nothing but a Janathon update 16/31

Went to the gym after work,

Cross Trained!

20 min bike ride – 6.9 miles interval training on the spin bike

Ab work out with a ball (that will hurt tomorrow)

Squat workout (that might hurt tomorrow too)

6 mins worth of planks and side planks (that hurts now)

Now family dinner and 3 day weekend!  Yippee!

Short and sweet.  I hope yours is going well too!

Happy 16th day and most importantly Happy Friday!  🙂

Janathon 15/31 and a hopeful event….

Today  was pace run day and again on the dreadmill.  Kind of getting tired of the dreadmill but I would rather do it and get my runs in than risk my life on black ice and being hit by a car running at night.  I guess I make it sound worse than it was.  Really it was fine.  I started up a conversation with the person next to me on the dreadmill and learned that he had his hip replaced  4 years ago and has never really been able to run again.  I’m guessing but I would only put him in his 50’s.  The good news is that he is still very active, hiking, biking and doing some fun obstacle 5Ks for fun and not speed.  The therapist in me started talking about being grateful for what he has in his life and tried to help him not miss running so much, what can I say I take my work everywhere!  Anyway he was happy he could still do things but did say there is nothing like a “runner’s high” and I have to agree!  It was great chatting while running because it made the time go faster and when we got done talking I thanked him because now I only had 2 miles left and felt even more energized.

So in all it was a 7 mile pace run with an easy first mile and then pace after for an even 8:41 per mile pace.  Not to bad.

Now on to the hopeful event of the day… I took the chance and registered for the drawing for the New York City Marathon.  My marathon friend Judy and I have been talking about a marathon in the fall since she is doing an early April Marathon and I am training for a late April marathon.  The fall seemed like a good time for another one.  Anyway, if you don’t know, to run the marathon in New York you can qualify through time or go through a lottery and for me the time qualifier for the marathon would be 3:26 (holy crap who are these 40-44 yr old women who can do this which by the way is faster than qualifying for Boston which would be 3:45).  So I entered the drawing for a small $11 fee that goes to support youth running I believe so it’s non-refundable.  I have a slim chance of making it because there is a huge amount of people who enter but at least I put myself out there.  Now I just need to find a back up plan for the fall but I think I have a little time.  The drawing is the first part of March so I will know then.  So here is to hoping for the best!

Happy 15th day of Janathon!  Ever run a marathon?  How fast are you and if you’re really fast do you want to teach a 42 yr old woman how to get that fast?!
